Community Action Plans have been developed for each of the six community areas in the current district of Wansbeck. Our six Community Area Partnerships, along with Active Citizens and members of the public have worked on prioritising the issues in their own areas. Over a period of six to nine months, the plans have been refined and are now published as easy to read Community Action Plans (February 2009). These plans not only highlight the issues of concern for local people, they propose specific actions which communities and service providers can take to improve the quality of life for local people across the six areas. Each Plan is supported by a Community Charter which outlines a series of service commitments to the communities from the local authority and the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. The plans link directly to the Northumberland Sustainable Communities Strategy and Local Area Agreement and are intended to be taken forward by the new local authority, partnership and community infrastructure arrangements being developed in Northumberland. A free day of events to celebrate the unique culture and heritage of Wansbeck will be held just days before the district is wound up to become part of the new Northumberland single council. A Wansbeck Comunity Festival will take place in and around People's Park in Ashington on Saturday, March 14, from 11am until 4pm. In a packed and varied programme the organisers say there will be something of interest for all ages to enjoy in a day of celebration that will also showcase the creative talents of people and groups from around Wansbeck. There will be music, dance, sport and art activities; marquees filled with stalls; a kite display; photographic exhibitions and film screenings featuring the district's past, present and the future shot at locations around the district by talented local youngsters or borrowed from the archives to recall the heyday of mining and fishing, Ashington football legends Jackie Milburn and the Charlton brothers Jack and Bobby. Around the park a climbing wall will be set up for people of all ages to try out; a novel temporary nine-hole disc golf course laid out to test the skill of contenders; Baloonatic and airial dance shows featuring Steve Cousins and dance company 'Hang'; and the chance to play traditional games as well as trying out some new ones with the Wansbeck Play Rangers. In a packed workshop programme there will be screen printing, medieval tile making, raku pottery and T-shirt stecilling as well as the chance to contribute to a large picture mosaic, make a 3D stream train or a replica miner's lamp. The Wansbeck Matters will be demonstrating the age-old miners' wives tradition of making proggy mats while Real Food Works will show how healthy can be tasty as well as nutritious and inexpensive. Music and dance performances will be given by Wansbeck's Ashington Colliery Band, Chinese lion dancers and Tribe Zuza, the cobweb's Orchestra, Garry Anderson and Athena's Child.
Full details of all the Wansbeck Community Festival events and activities can be found in a colourful leaflet that will be available at local venues from February 24.
